2009 Children’s Ministry
We are pleased to announce the Children’s Ministry Team for 2009. The original aim was to appoint one Children’s Director who would oversee all of the children’s ministry as well as provide programme expertise and curriculum development. The exciting news is that we have three people being added to the team:
Children’s Director: Barbara Broughton. Barbara will be responsible for the staff team and the children’s ministry overall - 10 hours per week;
Children’s worker: Rick Shaw. As well as his responsibilities for InterYouth, Rick will be overseeing the Sunday programmes of Early Birds and Rock of Life - 10 hours per week;
Children’s worker: Kirsty Van der Klip. Kirsty is responsible for Crèche, Junior Early Birds, Junior Rock of Life, and Children’s Ministry support (leadership, administration, curriculum etc) – 15 hours per week.
As announced late last year Catherine Richardson will be employed 15 hours per week overseeing community projects and events and Alison Outram continues in her role as 545 kids (evening service) leader. All of these staff members bring an exciting array of gifts to the ministry, and we are confident that we have the team in place to continue leading a dynamic children’s programme on Sundays, operate the growing number of children’s community projects, and work towards our goals and dreams as detailed in the Strategic Vision.
In saying that, the staff team are simply responsible to ensure the programmes are run effectively. In every programme and event we rely on an awesome (and growing) team of volunteers who serve in this ministry week after week. This team is here to ensure our volunteers have the resources to do what they love – minister to the kids in our church and the wider community to lead more and more of them to live Christ Centred lives. Please pray for this team (staff and volunteers) as they build relationships and minister to our kids.
Profiles
Children’s Director (10 hours) Barbara Broughton: I am married to Gordon and live on a farm west of Christchurch. I have four children. Anna is married and living in Auckland. Thomas is in Tanzania working for V.S.A. Lynda-Alice is living in Lincoln and is about to travel overseas. Emily is studying at Otago University. I am currently Head of Learning support at St. Andrews college preparatory school. I come with a wide experience in children’s ministry, which includes beach missions, Sunday school, Youth for Christ and holiday programmes. I am excited to be joining the team at Hornby.
Community Based Children’s Worker (15 hours) Catherine Richardson: I have been part of this church since 1996 and involved in working with children here since 1997. I am married to Brent and have two awesome daughters Emma (14) and Caitlin (12). We are soon to be joining the West Melton congregation as Brent commences his Internship there. My background is in both Health and Education where I worked as an Occupational Therapist, although more recent years have seen me focusing on work with children and families in the church and local community. I’m passionate about seeing hurt people made whole and have a heart for those who are struggling (be they children or adults) - only in Christ is much of this restoration or healing possible. I’m really looking forward to working part time continuing to build the relationships between church and community as part of the HPCC team serving God together.
Children’s Worker (15 hours) Kirsty Van der Kilp: I’m 22 years old; I grew up in South Auckland and have lived there all my life. I didn’t grow up in a Christian home but my parents’ separation when I was 15 sent me on a journey towards God that I have never turned back from, I was baptized at 18 and the following year I started a Bachelor in Applied Theology at Carey Baptist College. For a number of years I have wanted to move to Christchurch to be closer to my mum who lives here. I will be involved in managing the Hornby Primary School OSCAR programme and working with the Children’s ministry here at HPCC. I love working with children and have a real passion for helping them to grow into mature and devoted followers of Christ. I look forward to being a part of this community
Children’s Worker (10 hours) Rick Shaw: Well it is an exciting time to be involved in the new direction of the Children’s Ministry here at HPCC as well as working with the intermediate age group. These two areas will complement each other and I am looking forward to the challenges and excitement that this will bring. In case you are not aware from my previous blurb, I am 45 years old with three awesome children; Kate, Mitch and Arna as well as a little grandchild Nukumovaha’i (who is getting dedicated today and that is why I am unable to be with the rest of the team in the service). Recently I have been putting my advanced trade in building to good use, and spent 8 years helping set up and co-ordinate support groups at Depressions Support Network which included teaching at schools. I have been a part of ROL in the past and it is great to be involved in this ministry again. I love sports and play interclub tennis, soccer and touch with a little bit of squash thrown in for good measure. I am looking forward to what God has in store for Children’s Ministry as we partner with Him in reaching out to our community.
545 Kids (4 hours) Alison Outram: I'm 21 years old and have been at HPCC for the last 4 years. I was born in South Africa but I'm loving my new home in NZ. Last year I worked as a programme manager for OSCAR which was great fun and this year I'm furthering my education with a Web Design course at Natcoll. I love reading, drawing and the outdoors, especially my family's crazy day trips to places like Pancake Rocks or Mount Cook. I'm excited to be a part of 5:45 again this year, last year was amazing and I can't wait to get started again this year!
Other staff and volunteers
To pastorally support our children and families we are encouraging our leaders to phone the children in their group once a term. This is not meant to be intrusive, just a friendly chat to encourage their faith.
